To eat wild strawberries is like tasting the Tree of Knowledge. That’s what it is for 78-years-old professor Isak Borg. He is on his way to receive a mention for his lifetime achievements. The trip is heavy as the protagonist, played by silent movie director Victor Sjöström, not only carries his whole life but also because the stations of his journey are full of dreams, visions and memories. It’s about life, God and death. There is no sum to be drawn out of life, every moment is important. With his interpretation of this knowledge, Bergman, 39 years old when he shoots the film, gave a floating lightness to the heavy subject.
